For a lot of us travel insurance is merely seen as one of the many extras which the travel agent tries to get us to add to our holiday package to assist in boosting his profits and to make our holiday even more expensive than it needs to be. However, there are at least three excellent reasons for ensuring that you do not leave home without your international travel medical insurance plan tucked safely into your suitcase. First, a travel insurance policy will protect you against losing all of your financial investment in your holiday should an emergency crop up which forces you to cancel your holiday. This is particularly true in cases where you are booking your holiday well in advance as you cannot know what may happen in the weeks leading up to your trip. This said, by their very nature emergencies tend to appear at any time and without warning and so this is one form of protection which really should not be considered in terms of time. It is human nature to think that nothing will ever happen to us however a holiday can often involve a considerable up-front payment and the loss of these funds could well mean that you cannot re-arrange your holiday later on. Second, a travel insurance policy enables you to pay for medical treatment both while you are in transit and at your destination and, if you are unlucky enough to have a significant accident or illness, will pay for you to return home if necessary. Medical treatment could well be very good at your destination and it may even be a lot cheaper than it is at home. However, a week in hospital may still produce a substantial bill which eats deeply into your holiday spending money. It is also possible that medical treatment at your destination leaves a lot to be desired and you could well need to curtail your holiday and return home to get the treatment you need. Third, a travel insurance policy will provide protection for your possessions both while you are traveling and abroad so that you will get compensation in the event of loss. If you have spent any time traveling then you will almost certainly have experienced the loss of your luggage at some time and will know just how annoying and expensive this can be. I will not forget stopping for a bite to eat on my way to the airport at the end of one holiday and carefully securing my suitcase out of sight in the trunk of my hire car. When I got back about thirty minutes later I found that someone had forced the lock on the passenger door and folded the rear seat down to access the boot and make away with my case. I will also not soon forget sitting at a road junction one hot and sunny day in Portugal when a motorcycle drew up beside the car and a young man reached through the open passenger side window to snatch my mother's handbag which was on the floor by her feet. Traveling overseas can be expensive at the best of times but traveling without suitable insurance cover can result in bills that you simply cannot afford to pay. So, when you are planning a trip do not forget to add travel insurance to your vacation list.
