With a virus like herpes, it's important to remember that "permanent" does not mean "constantly active." In fact, this life-long affliction to your body would much rather be a dormant one. Many people, although aware that the virus will be in their body for life, still seem to look into quick-fix "cures." There is no magical cure- DMSO, hydrogen peroxide and nonoxynol-9 are not going to get rid of herpes, so it's time to accept its presence in your life. There are, however, effective herpes treatments. The following are steps in accepting and dealing with herpes so that its impact on your life is minimal. 1. An important part of acceptance is forgiveness. No matter what the circumstances were, even if you were hurt and deceived, you can start by forgiving the person who gave you herpes. If you hold on to negativity and anger, you create that in your life, increasing stress and triggering your herpes. 2. Continue your work with forgiveness by forgiving yourself. There is no need to hold yourself at fault, to feel shame or guilt over your condition. Nothing about herpes changes your worth as a person. Your morals and ethics have not been drawn into question by this event. You are no less attractive or worthy than before you were infected. 3. Be honest with your family and close friends. If you yourself place a stigma on your herpes, then all those around you will react as if there was one. Whatever you project comes back to you; what do you feel you deserve? If you tell your loved ones that you have a disease, any disease, you would likely expect their support, care and concern. You can have exactly that by being at peace with your herpes and sharing those feelings with your loved ones. Remember, over half the adult population has either type 1 or 2 of the herpes virus- you are not in the minority. 4. Use whatever tools you have, be it prayer, meditation, visualization, etc, to make peace with the virus. This is more than making peace with yourself regarding the virus' existence, but rather, about you and the virus reaching a peaceable accord. This may sound a bit new-agey to you, but go ahead and put those rose-colored sunglasses on. When you reach a place of peace and balance with yourself and your body, you need not worry about herpes being anything other than dormant. 6. Identify your triggers. Triggers are what cause your herpes to re-activate. Common triggers include stress, excessive sun exposure, an unhealthy diet, a yeast infection, lack of sleep, or unprotected sex with someone else with herpes. After you know what your triggers are, seek not only to avoid them, but to create a healthy lifestyle that prevents your body from being stressed. Exercise is an important part of any health regimen. Yoga, qi-gong, and tai-chi are all great ways to keep your body limber and strong while bringing a sense of peace and calm to your life. 7. Diet truly is one of the most important aspects of your life. In terms of dealing with herpes there are several categories of foods both to avoid and to reach for. Stay away from caffeine (in all forms!), nicotine, excessive alcohol, carob, raisins, and cereal grains. You should also avoid most nuts and seeds, except for flax and hemp seeds, both of which are rich in omega fatty acids. Other foods with omega fatty acids are salmon, tuna, and mackerel. Avocados, yogurt, and olives are quite good for you as well. Be sure to get your L-lysine from your diet, rather than from a supplement. Garlic can be eaten or taken as a supplement, as can selenium.
