A Few Points To Think About When Choosing Good Health Insurance

By: Donald Saunders

With such a huge number of different options available in the field of health insurance policies it is not easy to know just what to look for when you are trying to select a good health insurance plan that will meet your needs.

Your starting point must be to decide precisely what your specific needs are. Do you, for instance, require coverage for just yourself or do you require a policy to cover yourself and your spouse or your entire family? Naturally this is a relatively simple question but the next one is a little more difficult. What exactly are your health needs? Are you and other people who need to be included in any policy fit and healthy or do you (or they) have any pre-existing medical conditions that will have to be considered? Is there anyone with special medical needs or will they need treatment by specific medical specialists or in special medical institutions?

Next, you have to understand the options that are available if you are organizing coverage through a group health scheme set up by your employer. Here your options are restricted to those that are provided under the policy that the company is offering and this could or could not make your decision simpler. If you are not in a position to consider coverage under a company's group plan then you will have to have at least a basic knowledge of the difference between indemnity plans and managed care plans.

An indemnity policy affords you the freedom to select when and where you go for medical treatment. This freedom to choose will generally be at the price of high out-of-pocket expenses but in nearly all instances this can be a reasonable trade-off. Managed care plans, by contrast, are far more restrictive and will require you to seek treatment from doctors and in medical facilities within the managed care plan's network. For treatment that is over and above what might normally be considered as basic care you will also generally have to seek pre-approval. Costs within managed care plans are less than those experienced within indemnity policies and if you are not particularly concerned about where and by whom you are treated, or must keep a close eye on medical expenses, then a managed care plan could be a good choice for you. This of course an extremely simplistic comparison and you will have to investigate this in more detail depending upon your own particular circumstances.

Once you have decided what sort of policy you want, the next question is how to go about selecting the best insurance provider. There are a lot of companies selling health insurance policies today ranging from quite small independent firms to the well-known corporate giants. As is the case with any major purchase, and today health insurance certainly falls into this category, you will have to do your homework before making your decision.

A good starting point is to ask colleagues and friends or possibly your own doctor. The Internet can also provide you with a tremendous amount of information about the whole range of health insurers.
