Blackjack Variations. Which One To Play?

By: BlackjackUK2

It is not a secret that there is hardly any casino game that exists in one and the same form or way. Every casino game has variations, but the number of these variations is different for different games. Blackjack is not an exception here. Moreover Blackjack can be said to be the only casino game that has so many of them. But don’t think that these variations differ form each other greatly. The principle and objective of the game always remain the same. You must form a hand as close to 21 as possible.
These variations of the game differ mostly in the number of decks and as a result in the house advantage. If you know Blackjack tips and apply them to the game you must know that the fewer decks in the game, the lower the house edge. So, in this article I have written about the most famous Blackjack variations, the number of decks used in them and the house advantage. Of course there are some other differences between them but they are not of great importance.
The main characteristics of European Blackjack are the following: two decks are used, the dealer stands on soft 17. You are allowed to double on 9 to 11 only, doubling after splitting isn’t allowed, resplitting is not allowed, it is allowed to draw to split aces, no surrender, no hole card (player loses total amount bet against dealer’s blackjack), Insurance not resolved until the end of hand, only one bet position possible.
Atlantic City Blackjack has the following features: 8 decks are used, the dealer stands on soft 17, the player may double on any first two cards, doubling after splitting is allowed, only one split is allowed, no surrender, the dealer checks for blackjack.
Atlantic City Blackjack in some other casinos can have the following characteristics: 8 decks are used, the dealer stands on soft 17, doubling on any first two cards is allowed, resplitting to three hands is allowed, doubling after splitting is allowed, the dealer peeks for blackjack, late surrender is allowed, only one bet position.
Multi-Hand Blackjack has the following features: 5 decks are used, the dealer stands on soft 17, doubling on 9 or 11 only is allowed, no doubling is allowed after splitting, resplitting isn’t allowed, the player may draw to split aces, no surrender, no hole card, insurance not resolved until end of hand, five bet positions.
Vegas Strip Blackjack has the following features: 4 decks are used, the dealer stands on soft 17, double on any first two cards, double after splitting is allowed, resplitting to three hands, the dealer peeks for blackjack, only one bet position.
Vegas Downtown Blackjack is characterized by the following features: 2 decks are used, the dealer hits on soft 17, double on any first two cards, double after split is allowed, resplit to three hands, the dealer peeks for blackjack, one bet position.
Double Exposure Blackjack has the following characteristics: both dealer’s cards are dealt face up, the dealer wins all ties except on blackjack, all player wins (including blackjack) pay 1 to 1, Blackjack tie pays 1 to 1, 8 decks are used, the dealer hits soft 17, the player may resplit to four hands, doubling on hard 9 to 11 only, one card to split aces, doubling after splitting is allowed.
Single Deck Blackjack casino has the following features: 1 deck is used, the dealer hits on soft 17, doubling on any first 2 cards, doubling after splitting is allowed, splitting once, the dealer checks for blackjack, one bet position.
Blackjack Switch has the following features: the dealer hits a soft 17, the player must make two bets of equal size, the cards will be dealt face up, the dealer will peek for blackjack with an ace or ten up, if the dealer has a blackjack all player hands will immediately lose, except a player blackjack will push, the player may switch the second card dealt to each hand, the player may double on any 2 cards, the player may double after a split, the player may split once, Blackjacks pay even money. The main characteristics of European Blackjack are the following: two decks are used, the dealer stands on soft 17, you are allowed to double on 9 to 11 only, doubling after splitting isn’t allowed, resplitting is not allowed, it is allowed to draw to split aces, no surrender, no hole card (player loses total amount bet against dealer’s blackjack), Insurance not resolved until the end of hand, only one bet position.
Now, that we know the features of these Blackjack variations it will not be difficult to determine the house edge. European Blackjack and the house edge is 0.39%. Atlantic City Blackjack and the house edge is 0.49% or Atlantic City Blackjack with the house edge of 0.35%. Multi-Hand Blackjack with the house edge of 0.63%. Vegas Strip Blackjack with the house advantage of 0.34%. Vegas Downtown Blackjack with the house edge 0.38%. Double Exposure Blackjack with the house edge of 0.69%. Single Deck Blackjack with the house edge of 0.058%. Blackjack Switch with the house edge of 0.17%. So as you can see Single Deck Blackjack has the lowest house edge and it proves the principle of the basic strategy. So, when choosing a Blackjack game to play remember about this article. Good luck!
