Cigar Lovers Love Cigar Humidors

By: david

We preserve food through refrigeration. We keep leather shiny and supple by regular conditioning. In Egypt, their mummies were preserved by rubbing them with special types of oil and then wrapping them in fabric But how do we preserve our expensive and valued Cuban cigars? Through a cigar humidor, of course! A cigar humidor is used in controlling the humidity surrounding the cigars and other types of tobacco products.

A cigar humidor may appear like an ordinary box, but do not be fooled by its appearance. It is usually made of wood, with its interiors carved out of an elegant Spanish cedar. Cigar humidors are especially designed to maintain and preserve aging cigars. It can also be used as a household furniture and even as a valuable family heirloom which can be passed from a generation to another.

Cigars experts say that the ideal range of humidity for keeping cigars is around 68 to a maximum of 77 degrees Fahrenheit. Typically, a humidor contains a hygrometer which measures the humidity inside a box. It keeps an optimal range of humidity through insertion or removal of moisture inside the box.

What most cigar enthusiasts fail to recognize is that it is not recommended to put their cigars inside the cigar humidor immediately after buying the said box. Newly purchased humidors have to be seasoned first. This way, the humidor works well and serves its purpose- that of keeping the aroma and flavor of your favorite cigars.

So how do you season a humidor? Here is a step-by-step guide on how to season your cigar humidor.

First, you have to soak a sponge in a bucket of distilled water. Never use scents or soap. You also need not use tap water since it has minerals that are damaging to the humidor. Then, wipe the exposed wood, including the dividers and the inside lid. Make sure you do not use paper towels or fraying clothe since it can damage the wood.

After that, spray the sponge with extra distilled water. Put it inside the humidor, just on top of the plastic bag which is important since it assures that the sponge will not directly touch the wood. Once you have filled the humidifying tool, wipe it down. After about 30 minutes, the humidifying tool should rest, usually on a hand towel.

Leaving the wet sponge as well as the humidifying tool inside, slowly close the lid of the humidor and then let it stand overnight. The next morning, refresh the humidifying tool. If the sponge is dry, add more distilled water. Then let the humidor stand for another evening. After which, remove the sponge and the plastic bag.

Cigars, particularly Cuban cigars, are considered expensive and valuable. Cuban cigars, for one, known as Roles Royce of general tobacco products, are considered as expensive products that should be taken care of and valued. It is but an imperative for cigar lovers to have cigar humidors to take care of their expensive and valuable cigars.
