Facts about Limousines

By: david

Originally, the makers of limousines just had the rich and famous in mind and thus they were only seen in the driveways in some swank chalet or country home or in an upscale address in a big city with a chauffer in attendance since that was the norm ever since the early days when chauffeurs drove the horse drawn carriages for their owners. The term limousine in fact has feminine connotations and is actually an adjective (feminine) derived from the word Limoges that in turn is the name of a French province. The most unique aspect of limousines was that the chauffer had a separate cabin than the other passengers and this characteristic is what distinguishes a limousine from other transport vehicles.

The year 1902 saw the advent of the limousine in which the driver’s seat was placed outside to that of the passengers though it was still a compartment with some covering and it had a look that resembled the cloak hood that was commonly used in the French region known as Limoges. Things changed as far as the design of the limousine was concerned when in the year 1928, in Arkansas in the US, the first stretch limousine appeared, which obviously was far different to its early predecessors and also from the kinds of New York limos that you might see today on the streets of the city.

These new versions were also referred to as ‘big band buses’ since they were most used in the transportation of some of big name big band leaders and also their entourage along with instruments and other paraphernalia.

Later still, there was another transformation to the limousines which were now used as funeral cars and most such limousines were built on the chassis of Cadillac’s after which there was a mushrooming of the limousine industry with newer designs being incorporated and their popularity too began to grow, especially as they were being used to transport Presidents, movie stars and also other famous people.

It would not be wrong in thinking that the limousine is nothing but an elongated sedan which is achieved by lengthening of the frame and wheelbase which allows for making the rear passenger compartment a lot more spacious than is absolutely necessary with plenty of leg room. However, despite the fact that today, you could hire a limousine such as the many New York limousines that are available on rent; they are still mostly used for transporting rich as well as famous people, VIPs as well as royalty and even political figures. Still, if you hire a New York limo today, you never know, you may be sitting on the very seat that may have been occupied by some famous person.

Some of the newer limousines that you will find have been made by some of the more famous automakers including Audi, Mercedes Benz, Hummer, BMW and of course, Lincoln and Leland as well as Cadillac. Nowadays, the limousines that you sit in are a fry cry from the original limousines because these new limousines are filled with expensive and high tech gadgets that give you a totally unique experience far removed from what the early limousine owners ever experienced.
