International Travel Health Insurance Should Not Be An Option

By: Donald Saunders

If you are about to travel abroad, whether on business or on pleasure and for only a few days or many months, you should not leave home before you have purchased suitable international travel health insurance coverage.

Medical care can be very costly abroad and in many areas you will discover that you will not be able to receive medical treatment, even in emergency circumstances, unless you can pay for your treatment up front. If this seems strange then take my word for it it is a fact.

On a recent vacation I accompanied a colleague to the local hospital in a well known Far Eastern holiday city following a fortunately minor road traffic accident in which he suffered a nasty gash to his foot requiring stitches and, in addition to the nurses and doctors in the emergency room, we were also met by one of the hospital cashiers who requested details of my friend's travel health insurance or a credit card/cash payment before treatment could be commenced.

International travel health insurance is designed to provide medical cover for individuals or families traveling abroad and is a very flexible form of medical insurance cover. It often allows for daily rates (rates based on the number of days you will be traveling) and can normally be purchased without any requirement to answer health questions and regardless of age. Cover is also normally available on a worldwide basis and can also be arranged to provide cover for travel to specific countries.

One very important thing to think about when purchasing international travel health insurance however is just where in the world you intend traveling to and what sort of medical care will be available to you on arrival. Bearing this in mind, you should ensure that any plan covers you for every event including such things as hospitalization, ambulance fees and, critically, cover for transportation back home should this prove to be necessary.

Remember too that, if you are holidaying as a family, then any plan should cover all members of your family and provide for such things as expenses should it be necessary for one or both parents to stay in the hospital with a sick child or to travel home with a child by air ambulance.

One of the very last things that we ever think about happening when we travel abroad, particularly on holiday, is having an accident or falling sick while we are away with anything more than a simple upset stomach. Nevertheless, accidents do happen every day and serious illness can and does strike without warning. Indeed, the chances of such an event are considerably increased when we are out of our usual environment, so why should we take the risk.

When it comes to purchasing international travel health insurance the principles are the same as those that apply to purchasing any other form of insurance. Do not rush and shop around examining plans from several different companies before making any decision. Stick with well know major insurers, which have an international reputation, and read carefully through the small print of any plan document before signing on the dotted line.

Finally, bear in mind that dealing with medical problems when you are ill and thousands of miles from home is something that needs to be quick and easy. So, do not be tempted to cut corners when arranging your plan! You may pay a bit more than you would perhaps like to but, if you need to call on your plan, you will be very glad that you spent those few extra dollars.
