You may be thinking of trying to open a franchise business years from now when you are ready and all... but before you even think about it you should think about the amount of money you need at the beginning. If you dream to franchise your business you need to start planning from the earliest stages of your business, maybe as early as the setting up of the operations manual. You should only consider starting a business without the help of a franchise if you have the knowledge to create the same management systems a franchise has. If you want to franchise your business have in mind that franchises survive at a much greater margin than independent start - ups because they are better organized, and use proven methods. Everyone likes to think they have the knowledge to organize a business from scratch, but very, very few can. Most who do, end up creating jobs for themselves instead of investments, have to work ungodly hours to break even and maybe make a profit if they are lucky. Franchises make higher profit margins because they are better organized and run more efficiently, even with the royalty fees coming out. There are the very few exceptions of independent start - ups that do know how to organize a business like a franchise, and do make more money for not having to pay royalties. Those are the few that end up as franchises themselves, having other people pay them for the success of their system; and they are the most likely to have a great operations manual. If you have no experience with the organization of franchises, creating your own start - up from scratch is an extremely tough route. It is surely cheaper up front, but you have to ask yourself how much more expensive it will be if you fail. Unfortunately, the odds are stacked overwhelmingly against you. Even if you have enough money when you start up and you make up a brilliant operations manual, very unexpected things might come along and you might need to call it quits. Having your own business yields freedom, greater profits if you are successful, less restrictions, more opportunity to grow, to change with your customers, to negotiate contracts, etc. When you franchise your business most of those functions are controlled for you; but you will also pay high fees and percentages of profits to pay for it. If you can handle doing it on your own, you should definitely do it as you may find that there are many reasons why franchises are less than ideal. However, for some people, if it's the only way they can go into business, it's probably better than nothing. There are many people that have done well with franchises, but they are also much more expensive to start up. The up-front costs for any large nationally known name brand are extremely high. And if it's not a nationally known name brand, the value to you is not so great. Spending a few more months reading and studying before you commit to anything will pay off in a few years’ time.
