Advertising is a nothing more that communication whose purpose it is to inform potential patients about the quality and price of medical services. Every major media medium can be used to deliver these messages, including: television, radio, movies, magazines, newspapers, the Internet. In the Medical Tourism and Travel industry the internet is the major medium of choice for both patients and medical providers. The internet will most often provide the best return on investment and reach the largest number of qualified patients for international hospitals. Due to the very nature of the medical tourism industry the advertising must focus more on basic information about the credibility and quality of care. Honest, Truth, and Integrity are all important messages to convey. The two primary motivators for choosing a provider out of their home country is quality of care, and price. Quality is the most important and greatest cause of anxiety for the prospective medical travel patient. Frequently those doctors with a large advertising campaign may be well know, but in a large number of cases these campaigns often raise questions as to the level of care that will be received at these locations. Is the desire of the doctor to provide individual care of each patient or is the doctor seeking a larger throughput of patients in order to increase revenue? In order for a doctor to build a practice which is based on a solid recurring customer base, it is better to focus on the care of each individual patient and generate quality referrals. The most powerful and influential advertising can come from a doctors current patients. If these patients are treated with care and compassion, they will recommend this doctor to family, friends, co-workers and others that might be in the need of international medical care. Public service and volunteer work is another easy way to for a doctor to advertise without coming across very strongly. If potential patients view the doctor as someone who truly cares about people and making them better, this will assist in ways that can not be measured. A carefully crafted and sensitive advertising campaign can bring the new patients to a doctor’s practice without establishing an impression which is contrary to what the doctor is hoping to give. Doctor advertising should promote the positive aspects of the doctor without giving the appearance that the doctor is just a modern day “snake oil” salesman or one that cares more about money that their patients.
