Top Tips To Help Software Engineer Graduates During Interviews

By: Chelsea Michaels

As a new graduate you may be experiencing some difficulties within the UK job market especially where any IT market is concerned. The IT explosion has drawn to a close and the promise of three or four years ago, steady employment in IT has ended. There are many things you can do to help yourself secure the ideal job especially when interviews are so important.

Weaknesses & Improvement
It is vital to know where you need to improve, If your only experience of programming is in Haskell and the position available consists of some Object Oriented languages like Java then it is most significant that you do some reading and start learning by yourself – let your interviewer know and make a point of it. This will signify that you are aware that you need to learn and are the type of person who is trying to improve their experience level outside of working hours. Many interviewers will then take time to train you especially when they can see you have the intellect as well as the willingness to improve your skill base.

Working Experience
As an applicant straight out of university you will not have had much practical working experience , actually using what you know then, enhance your experiences such as team projects and any tuition you gave to lower year students as well as working within deadlines and project management you experienced especially in your final year. Chances are if your application made it to interview stage that the company are looking to take on a trainee who may be able to teach them something new. Have faith in yourself! If you don’t then who else will?

Know the programming language in Question
Don’t apply for a programming job if you have no actual experience of the programme required. If you have a wealth of experience coding in PHP but have not much .NET knowledge and in the position available .NET programming is a huge part in the job role, then do yourself a favour and learn the basic constructs and standard object libraries for .NET.

Tests in Interview
It has been a standard practice to set IT professionals a test to make sure you have the essential practical skills and to see how you react to pressure. Going back to the previous point, it may be easier to understand the test if you know a bit about the background of the person who has set the test for you, so basic research and learning the language is a must.

IT Working Structures
Have a question prepared about the typical working environment you may start working in, ask about the seating arrangements, if they practice extreme programming, brainstorming or other activities and ask if they have strategies to relieve stress! Questions like this depict that you are seriously thinking about the conditions of this particular work place.
