The fact that children like security is pretty universally known. Parents play a large role in that security, as do having familiar spaces in which they are comfortable and having a routine. Knowing this, it is easy to understand why travel can be stressful for children, especially if they don't really understand what's going on. Try explaining airport security to a toddler! Don't let this frighten you away from travel, though. There is plenty that can be done to help make the travel experience easier for kids, which in turn makes it a much more pleasant journey for the adults. Technology has come such a long way, and while we are used to evaluating that sentence and thinking of electronic gadgets and the like, I am actually thinking about travel cribs. Think about it- having a baby travel bed with UV screening for your child so that it would protect them in the great outdoors that was lightweight and folded down small enough to slide underneath your bed is something that certainly wouldn't have been possible twenty years ago. With portable beds safe for those from infancy to pre-school age, you can travel with ease, knowing that you never have to rely on others to provide a bed for your little one. Plus, toddlers tend to really get into the idea of having their own special space that can be set up just for them, so that bedtime is much easier than it might otherwise be. Likewise, travel strollers are the same way. Easily folded into a size that can fit into an overhead airline bin or in back of a cab, these strollers really are the item to have for travel. Many a parent has started off the day glad they didn't bring their stroller along and regretting it passionately at the end of the day. A lightweight stroller can make all the difference. Imagine a trip to a theme park where your child is super-excited and running around all morning, never getting into the stroller. Sure, you've been pulling something extra around, but then, in the afternoon, when they crash from all their morning excitement, being able to put them in the stroller is a great deal easier than carrying them around for the rest of the day. They are only cute when asleep if you aren't trying to carry about thirty five pounds of dead weight. One other way to keep your children calm during travel is to allow them to bring one special stuffed animal along with them. This animal will be their traveling buddy. Depending on the level of responsibility they are capable of, you might want to establish ground rules for where the animal can go- for example, it might be best that the teddy bear spend the day in the hotel room rather than spend the day in Disney World, unless you think your child will be able to be mindful and keep track of it throughout the day. This stuffed animal can be there to hug and hold when they are feeling stressed and can serve as a good companion for bedtime and naps as well.
