Why do you need to learn English?

Learning English the Right Way

Ever wonder why you still have not mastered the English language even though you have been taking English lessons for years now? Well, it is very possible that you are learning it the wrong way. There are five common mistakes that English learners make but do not realize, and this leads them to years of frustration in trying to communicate with native speakers.

The most common one is probably focusing on grammar study. Learning the correct grammar but seldom applying it in everyday conversation will not do any good to your learning process. You may be able to remember those hundreds of grammar rules come exam time but the moment you step into a normal conversation with a native speaker you will not have enough time to remember them all, let alone use them. So, forget about memorizing all the grammar rules. What you should do is having plenty of chats with native speakers, listen to them and imitate their approach, and you will soon find yourself speaking like them.

In English learning, listening is more important than speaking. Therefore, you should focus on listening first and only start speaking when you are ready. Most English teachers force their students to speak before they are ready and as a result they speak very slowly and make plenty of mistakes in pronunciation. While their mistakes are corrected, most learners end up having zero confidence to speak again because they are afraid of making mistakes. You will know when you are ready; it should be natural and effortless. So until then, do not force it.

To this day, many English learners still use formal textbooks to learn the language. I am not saying that you should not use them but relying solely on your textbooks is not a clever move, as native speakers do not use the kind of English found in your textbooks in almost every situation. They use casual English when speaking to their friends, family, and co-workers. Therefore, the only way you will communicate with them is to learn casual English as well.

You have been taught to learn from your mistakes, and yet you are still afraid of making them. Stop trying to be perfect! Focusing on your mistakes all the time will only hurt your learning process, and in the end you will not achieve your learning goal, which is to communicate your ideas and feelings in a way that people will understand. Keep in mind that native speakers make mistakes all the time and you should not be embarrassed when making mistakes but instead, learning from them.

No doubt the first thing most people will tell you when you say that you want to learn English is to sign up for English classes. Well, it is only a good move if you do not rely on your English teachers so much. English teachers are not the ones responsible for your learning success. They can help, yes, but ultimately you will have to find ways on your own that will make you learning a success. Find lesson and material that are affordable yet effective, such as audio files MP3 (listening) and online dictionary (vocabulary). Also, you must learn to stay positive and keep your energy and enthusiasm up all the time. And lastly, please, please do a lot of listening, reading, and speaking every day. Practice always makes perfect.
